Essex MP Jen Craft used sign language in a Parliamentary debate about the introduction of a national programme of British Sign Language classes for parents of deaf children.
The Labour MP for Thurrock said she and her husband used sign-supported English – a form of BSL – as part of their “toolkit to communicate” with their daughter, who has Down’s syndrome and hearing loss.
Addressing Westminster Hall, she said: “It is with a real sense of personal pride that I open this debate.
“It is an opportunity to celebrate Sign Language Week and the rich culture it commemorates, while discussing how we as MPs can go further to improve access and the inclusion of the BSL community.”
The debate on Thursday was the first time two interpreters have been used in Parliament – one signing on the broadcast feed and one in the gallery at Westminster Hall.
