Car crashes through wall into Nationwide bank branch

One person has been treated by paramedics after a car crashed through the front wall and window of a bank, closing a town centre road and showering it with bricks and glass.

The silver Honda smashed into the branch of Nationwide in Castle Street, Trowbridge, at 14:00 GMT, the ambulance service said, with one person treated at the scene.

A bank spokesperson said staff were in the building at the time but the branch was closed to the public and “no customers or colleagues were injured”.

The driver was already out of the car by the time fire crews arrived, Dorset and Wilshire Fire and Rescue Service said. Wiltshire Police also attended.

The fire service added that a crew from Trowbridge was sent to the scene and was assisting with safety on site while the electricity board investigated the building.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said it had been called to the scene, adding that Castle Street was expected to remain closed into the evening until the car had been recovered.

A spokesperson for Nationwide said: “We are aware of an incident at our Trowbridge branch. We can confirm no customers or colleagues were injured.

“The branch was closed to the public at the time and our colleagues were at the other side of the office.

“We will work to get the branch up and running again as quickly as possible and update customers when we have more information.”
