Athletics: Courtney-Bryant back to best after Olympic heartbreak

It was a welcome tonic for Courtney-Bryant after suffering Olympic heartbreak again last summer.

She had missed the Tokyo Games through injury and was again frustrated by illness and injury in 2024.

She could only finish fourth in the women’s 1500m at the UK Athletics Championships and Olympic Trials in June.

The middle distance specialist, who grew up in Dorset but represents Wales, says the devastation she felt last summer then became added motivation over the winter.

“I don’t think I’ve actually ever felt that low in sport,” Courtney-Bryant admits. “I’ve had a lot of injuries and setbacks, but that was the lowest I have felt.

“I’m just really lucky that I have such a supportive team around me. All my family and everything were really good.

“I just thought I need to pick myself back up, get back out racing, and I raced about five or six days after the trials and just got that momentum going.

“I felt like I just wanted to get back out and prove that I could still mix it with the best people in the world. I definitely feel I had an extra motivation this winter. Just more drive and definitely more dedication.”
