Hemsby villagers renew plea for action after Storm Darragh

As the Storm Darragh damage was assessed, Mr Brennan added: “Hemsby has been lucky in that we haven’t lost any homes, but we have lost several metres of sand again.”

Mr Brennan said three Conservative environment secretaries had visited Hemsby and last January, while in opposition, the current environment secretary, Steve Reed, pledged to change the funding formula to unlock money that could potentially fund defences.

Plans for a permanent sea defence stretching 0.8 miles (1.3km) have been granted a licence by the Marine Management Organisation.

However, Great Yarmouth Borough Council would need to find £15m to complete the work.

Mr Brennan added: “We’ve been let down right the way down the line. People have promised us the world and have delivered nothing.

“It really feels like we’re being managed while they allow the coast to retreat.”
