Budget: Welsh ministers hope for new money in Chancellor’s speech

Welsh ministers will be listening closely to Rachel Reeves’ first Budget for any extra spending in England that would trigger an increase for Wales.

Finance secretary Mark Drakeford told BBC Wales’ Westminster correspondent Shelley Phelps that he is not expecting “bumper” sums, but what he describes as “the first steps on a journey” to repair the damage done by 14 years of Conservative rule.

In a pre-budget speech the Prime Minister pledged to “rebuild” public services, so a funding boost for the NHS and education in England is expected.

But the UK government said tax rises will be needed to pay for the extra spending.
