Rwanda Genocide: ‘First time home since I fled 30 years ago’

Victoria Uwonkunda makes an emotional journey back to Rwanda, where she grew up.

She was visiting for the first time since she fled the 1994 genocide with her family at the age of 12.

Victoria retraces her journey from the capital Kigali, to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In April 1994 extremists belonging to the Hutu majority ethnic group in Rwanda killed an estimated 800,000 people, mainly minority Tutsi and some moderate Hutu. It happened in 100 days. The mainly Tutsi forces which took back power following the genocide were also alleged to have killed thousands of Hutu in retaliation- an allegation they deny.
