Man jailed after causing 2019 Nottingham crash that killed his wife

A man whose wife died three years after sustaining injuries in a crash he caused has been jailed.

Sylwia Borychowska was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle being driven by Haseeb Ahmed, when it left a 20mph (32km/h) road and hit a tree in Mapperley Road, Nottingham, on 3 August 2019.

Borychowska, 25, sustained injuries and underwent surgery to remove a section of her bowel, spending two months in hospital. The surgery left her vulnerable to infection and in 2022, she contracted pneumonia and died on 27 October of that year. A post-mortem examination concluded the crash injuries led to her death.

Ahmed, 34, was jailed for three years at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday.

Nottinghamshire Police said in relation to the crash, Ahmed had already received a two-year prison sentence – suspended for two years – after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance, two offences of driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and taking the vehicle without consent.

But following Borychowska’s death, the case was reopened and Ahmed was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, and causing death by driving while disqualified, which he admitted.

Ahmed, of Stockhill Circus in Basford, then pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving on the opening day of a trial earlier this year.

As well as being handed a custodial sentence, Ahmed was also disqualified from driving for three years and eight months, and must pass an extended driving test before he can regain his licence.

Police said Ahmed admitted at his sentencing hearing that he had consumed both alcohol and ecstasy before the crash.
