London City Lionesses captain Kosovare Asllani is set to sign a one-year contract extension despite suffering a serious injury.
The club confirmed in March that the Sweden international suffered a “complex multi-ligament injury”, including an anterior cruciate ligament rupture.
The 36-year-old faces a battle to return next season and her current contract was due to expire this summer.
However, BBC Sport understands London City Lionesses have given Asllani a one-year deal to aid her recovery from the long-term injury, despite it being unlikely she will feature again for the club.
With the Women’s World Cup taking place in Brazil next year, the Sweden captain, who has over 200 caps for her country, will be hoping to regain fitness in time to compete.
Asllani played a key role in leading London City to WSL 2 success in 2024-25 before scoring two goals and providing three assists in 19 top-flight appearances last season.
She is a fan-favourite at the club and has been a key player during her two-year spell at London City.
Meanwhile, London City Lionesses midfielder Malou Marcetto, who also suffered multiple knee ligament tears in the final WSL game of the season, is believed to have had positive progress in the start of her recovery from surgery.
London City, owned by US billionaire Michele Kang, is run independently and not affiliated with a men’s team.
They finished sixth in their debut campaign in the Women’s Super League in 2025-26 and have ambitions of competing for a Champions League qualification spot next season.
Kang has previously spoken about her desire to invest in the women’s game and provide the right medical resources, as shown by Asllani’s short-term extension.
Eder Maestre’s side have also been boosted in the transfer window by the sensational arrival of two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas, who swapped Barcelona for London City this month.
They have also added Spain centre-back Mapi Leon, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps, Denmark defender Janni Thomsen and Germany forward Nicole Anyomi.
It is understood London City are also hoping to bring in another attacking option, on top of further additions.
