Manchester United are set to appoint Matt Johnson as interim head of women’s football for six months from the end of the season.

He currently works for the club’s Foundation as well as overseeing the girls’ regional and emerging talent centres (RTCs).

Johnson will take over from Polly Bancroft, who leaves her role at United to join Grimsby Town as CEO in May.

He will step into the role as interim while majority owners INEOS continue to assess their long-term ambitions for the club.

Johnson is expected to start in the role in May and brings with him more than 26 years of experience in the women’s game.

Meanwhile, it is understood discussions are still taking place regarding the future of manager Marc Skinner, whose contract runs out this summer.
