World Boxing Cup 2026: Gallagher progresses but Marley loses in Brazil

Jude Gallagher opened Team Ireland’s account at the World Boxing Cup in Brazil in style with a 5-0 win over Kazakhstan’s Zhanseri Kosherbayev in the last 32.

The 24-year-old County Tyrone native will be back in action on Wednesday in the 60kg category against a Polish or USA opponent.

The Newtownstewart man won featherweight gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and participated in the 2024 Olympics.

“A tough one to get started (on). A very good opponent, a very technical, high-skilled bout so I’m just delighted to come out on the right side of that one,” said Gallagher.

“The last round was very important. I knew it was level going in to the last. I sort of went through him, took him by surprise a wee bit and I think I hurt him with a body shot. That allowed me to pick my shots better and control the third round.”

Things did not go so well for Dublin fighter Jack Marley however, the Monkstown clubman losing on a 4-1 verdict to Italian Dean Nwokedi Chime in the last 16 of the 90kg division.

A total of 11 boxers are representing Team Ireland at the event in Foz do Iguacu.
