Revamp of Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries shopping centre approved

A redevelopment of Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries shopping centre has been granted planning permission.

Owners Landsec will create space for a new food hall and build a new retail unit next to the current building.

Landsec announced last year it was scrapping previous plans to demolish the shopping centre in favour of the redevelopment.

Work on the revamp will begin in the second half of 2026 and take place over various phases.

Charlie Griffiths, the asset management director with Landsec, said he was delighted by the news.

He added: “Our proposal reflects the community call for better retail and leisure, demonstrates our confidence in Glasgow and is aligned to the Council’s vision to deliver economic growth and improvement to the city centre.”

Early work will include modernising the existing mall and adding more retail frontage.

Modern digital art and advertising displays will also be added to the building.

The company said it would invest in the wider area, helping create new and accessible public spaces.

Glasgow City Council Leader, Councillor Susan Aitken, said the renewed Galleries could be “a major catalyst in our city centre’s next chapter”.

The plans have been worked on with the Threesixty Architecture firm.

The centre will remain open while construction work is carried out.

Separate proposals to create a transport hub at Buchanan bus station, near the galleries, were unveiled earlier this year.
