Mountain rescue team saves family of eight in Saddleworth

A family of eight was saved by a mountain rescue team after they became stranded on a treacherous path.

The adults and children dialled 999 after the steep path became “unstable” near Dovestones reservoir, in Saddleworth, on Saturday afternoon.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said its 12-strong team was sent to rescue the family as it was “unsafe” for them to continue in Birchen Clough, which is known for its waterfalls.

The rescue team said it helped the family down the path before they formed a human chain to cross a river to safety.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) reached the family first but could not bring them down safely so called in the rescuers.

The family were well prepared with “appropriate clothing and footwear”, but became cold waiting for help, Oldham Mountain Rescue Team said.

They were given extra warm layers before beginning the descent, with each family member escorted by an individual mountain rescuer.

The rescue team said it then helped with the “safe crossing of the river by forming a human chain and putting in a safety line across the water”.

The family members were then warmed up in the team’s 4×4 vehicle before they were taken to their own car nearby following the rescue, which lasted more than two hours.

A rescue team spokesperson said: “A huge thank-you to our volunteer team members and to the police for their assistance.

“The family did the right thing in calling for help and we’re glad everyone made it down safely.”
