FAI Cup final – Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Cork City: League champions complete first double since 1987

Shamrock Rovers claimed a first FAI Cup since 2019 with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Cork City in the final at the Aviva Stadium.

Rory Gaffney scored twice to ensure that Stephen Bradley’s side ended the League of Ireland season with a Premier Division title and cup double for the first time since 1987.

Cork City, who finished bottom of the League of Ireland, were reduced to 10 men just before the break after Harry Nevin was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Josh Honohan.

Rovers capitalised on their man advantage after the restart and Gaffney netted twice in the space of six minutes.

The 36-year-old opened the scoring on 65 minutes when he converted Danny Grant’s cross and the forward added a second in the 71st minute when he fired low through the legs of Conor Brann.

It is a record-extending 26th FAI Cup for Stephen Bradley’s side, who were denied a famous win in the Uefa Conference League away to AEK Athens on Thursday through Luka Jovic’s injury-time penalty.

Rovers’ win ensures that Bohemians, who finished fourth in the table, will play European football next season along with the league champions, Derry City and Shelbourne.
