Man dies in crash during M62 police chase

A man has died and a section of the M62 remains closed after a car crashed during a police chase.

The driver had failed to stop for officers near junction 29 on the eastbound carriageway just before 01:00 BST on Saturday when his vehicle hit barriers as he tried to take the exit slip road, West Yorkshire Police said.

The man, aged in his 30s, was the only person in the black Mercedes C220 and died at the scene, officers said.

The M62 eastbound is closed between junctions 28 and 29, where it meets the M1 at Lofthouse, and police said the road would remain shut for some time.

Police said the man’s next of kin had been informed and were receiving support from specialist officers.

They advised motorists to follow diversions and seek alternative routes.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Officer for Police Conduct and the organisation will carry out an independent investigation.
