Doctor who praised Hitler in antisemitic rant allowed back to work

A Liverpool doctor who said she would “support Adolf Hitler if he was around today” during an antisemitic rant has been cleared to return to practice.

Dr Mili Shah, 47, was banned for four months earlier this year over her comments dating back to 2021 were the subject of a tribunal, alongside failings relating to patient care.

It was said Dr Shah’s “abhorrent” outburst amounted to racial harassment when she addressed a colleague at Broadgreen Hospital almost four years ago.

A review by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in July (MPTS) concluded Dr Shah, who is no longer employed by NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, is fit to return to work.

The initial tribunal in March was told how on September 30, 2021, while working at Broadgreen, Dr Shah made an antisemitic comment to a colleague about another member of staff.

The hearing was told of the doctor’s “nasty and venomous remarks” which included “All this antisemitism…if Hitler was around today I would support him”.

It was said this violated the dignity of her colleagues and created an “intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment”.

Dr Shah told March’s tribunal she had no recollection of making the remarks.

Despite this, her license to practise was suspended for four months by reason of misconduct, subject to a review, which was held in July.

The tribunal considered that in relation to her clinical failings, Dr Shah had shown “good and effective insight” into her failures over an extensive period.

It was said the dermatologist was capable of remediation and there had been no recurrence of failings in the work she had been undertaking during that period.

In relation to the antisemitic comments, it considered the remarks so abhorrent that public confidence in the profession would be undermined if a finding of impairment were not made in the case.
