Sinkhole forces partial closure of Glasgow street

A street in Glasgow city centre has been partially closed after road workers found a sinkhole.

It was discovered outside the Scottish Power building on St Vincent Street.

Scottish Water has closed the eastbound section of the road between Newton Street and Elmbank Street for emergency sewer repairs.

It said the cause of the sinkhole was not yet known and the duration of the repair will depend on further investigations.

Road users are advised to follow the signs in place, and local businesses remain open.

The affected sewer is located about four metres below the surface.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said they were “working hard” to investigate and fix this issue quickly and safely to help minimise disruption.

“We are also aware of upcoming events in the area, including the Lloyd’s Tour of Britain Women cycle race this Sunday and the men’s 10K next weekend. We’re in discussions with the organisers but both events are still expected to go ahead,” the statement said.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we carry out this essential repair.”
