Republic of Ireland: Leanne Kiernan and Aoife Mannion return to squad for friendlies

Ziu won the last of her 12 caps for the Republic against Slovakia in September 2022.

Liverpool striker Leanne Kiernan and Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion have returned to the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming friendlies against Italy and Wales.

Amber Barrett, Niamh Fahey and Jess Ziu are also included head coach Eileen Gleeson’s 26-player squad.

Wake Forest University forward Emily Murphy has received her first official call-up.

Murphy previously trained with the squad in April 2021.

Kiernan, Mannion and Ziu missed the World Cup in the summer because of long-term injuries, whilst the experienced Fahey has recently returned for her club Liverpool after a calf problem.

Barrett, who scored the winning goal against Scotland to seal the Republic’s place at the World Cup, has been recalled by Gleeson after missing out on the Nations League campaign.

The Republic finished top of their League B group after winning all six of their games to gain promotion to League A.

Gleeson, who was interim manager for the maiden Nations League campaign following Vera Pauw’s departure, was then appointed boss on a full-time basis in December.

Missing out on selection for the Republic are the injured Chloe Mustaki as well as Hayley Noonan, Erin McLaughlin, Ellen Dolan, Saoirse Noonan, Emily Whelan and Sinead Farrelly.

The two friendlies, against Italy in Florence on 24 February and Wales in Dublin three days later are preparation for the Republic ahead of the Euro 2025 qualifiers which begin in April.
