Diane Caldwell: Defender retires from Republic of Ireland duty

Republic of Ireland defender Diane Caldwell has announced her retirement from international football.

The 36-year-old won the first of her 102 international caps in 2006 against Denmark in the Algarve Cup.

The Zurich defender helped the Irish qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and she featured in their final group-stage match with Nigeria.

Caldwell scored four goals and became a centurion as she captained the Republic against Albania in October 2023.

“I always hoped this day would never come,” said Caldwell, who previously played for SC Sand, Reading and Manchester United.

“For me, playing for Ireland was everything. But now, it’s the right time for me to stop.

“Every time I put on the green jersey, I felt the utmost pride and passion to do the country justice. I absolutely loved every minute.

“I look forward to being a supporter again knowing that my heart is full of cherished moments and unforgettable memories.”

Caldwell is the second Irish defender to announce her international retirement after Liverpool’s Niamh Fahey called time on her Republic career on Thursday.

Marc Canham, the chief football officer at the Football Association of Ireland, said Caldwell “deserves her place in Irish football history”.

“She is someone who made a significant impact in an Ireland jersey.” he said.

“Part of the World Cup squad in 2023, she was a key figure in helping that team to forge a legacy that will benefit future generations of those involved in women and girls’ football.”
