Varanasi: The ancient city at the heart of India’s election

Varanasi is one of the world’s oldest cities and it’s often called India’s spiritual capital. It holds even more prominence during the Indian election because it’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency.

Varanasi is voting on 1 June in the last phase of this mammoth general election.

Since Mr Modi became the MP in 2014, the ancient city has gone through a modernisation drive. The BBC spoke to some residents to understand what they think of the development.
