West Bromwich Albion v Middlesbrough assistant referee Rob Smith released from hospital

Assistant referee Rob Smith has been discharged from hospital after being taken ill during Tuesday’s Championship match between West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough.

The game at The Hawthorns was stopped after Smith became unwell in the seventh minute and was taken off following initial treatment.

He was taken to hospital in Walsall and underwent tests before being allowed home where he is now recovering.

The referee’s body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) said: “We would like to extend our thanks to both clubs, the paramedics at the Hawthorns and the staff at Manor Hospital in Walsall for their care of Rob.”

The game finished in a 1-0 win for Middlesbrough with fourth official Jacob Miles filling in for Smith on the touchline.
