Tensions flared in the House of Commons on Wednesday night when a debate on Gaza “descended into farce”. The upheaval came after Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle broke with convention to allow a vote on a Labour amendment to a SNP motion.
The Speaker, who must remain politically impartial at all times, then faced accusations that he had allowed Labour to “hijack” the proceedings
Part of the role of Commons Speaker is to keep order in the chamber during debates.
Since 1992, four people have held the position of Speaker – and all of them have had to deal with rowdy MPs and dramatic moments.
