Huddersfield Town ended Swansea City’s unbeaten start to the Championship season as Josh Koroma’s first Terriers goal secured a 2-1 win at the Liberty Stadium.
Swansea were the better side in the first half yet found themselves trailing when Harry Toffolo struck from a well-worked corner.
Andre Ayew equalised with a penalty after Korey Smith was fouled, but it was Huddersfield who found a winner in a more even second half.
Koroma guided the ball home from the edge of the area to give Carlos Corberan’s improving team a first away win of the campaign and seven points from their last three games.
Swansea, for whom this was a first defeat in eight regular-season outings stretching back to 11 July, will feel they should have got something.
They had controlled the opening stages, with Marc Guehi forcing an early save from Ben Hamer before the Huddersfield goalkeeper did very well to deny Jamal Lowe.
But it was the visitors who went ahead as a short-corner routine undid Swansea, Juninho Bacuna exchanging passes with Carel Eiting before unleashing a low shot which was touched into the net by Toffolo.
Having conceded in the league for only the second time this season, Swansea responded swiftly as Smith met Ayew’s cross and was sent tumbling by Hamer.
Ayew missed his last spot-kick, in July’s play-off semi-final against Brentford, but put this one away in typically cool fashion, ambling up to the ball before sending Hamer the wrong way.
Having struggled going forward before the break, Huddersfield had a flurry of opportunities early in the second half.
Isaac Mbenza flashed across the face before a second effort beat Woodman but came back off the post, then Toffolo wasted a golden chance as he shot wide from point-blank range.
Next it was Swansea’s turn to be wasteful, with Ayew heading Matt Grimes’ free-kick wide with the goal at his mercy before Lowe saw a shot parried and sent the rebound over the bar.
Then came Koroma’s big moment, as he found the bottom corner to give Huddersfield a notable victory.
Swansea head coach Steve Cooper:
“The performance was good enough to win the game but we have conceded two really poor goals.
“The first was off a set-play when one or two people didn’t do they should be doing and the second, from the moment they got the ball to the moment they scored, we haven’t laid a glove on them. It’s everything I don’t want the team to be out of possession.
“At the same time, we probably created the most clear-cut chances we have had in a game so far this season. We could easily have scored four or five.
“There were large parts of the performance that were good, but in the end that’s why we lost the game.”
Huddersfield head coach Carlos Corberan:
“We are happy about the mentality of the team from the first minute.
“We knew today would be a very tough game because we know the quality of Swansea. It’s a team who try to play from the back and they press really aggressively too.
“Sometimes you take a bit of time to adapt to the game. First half we defend more than we attack because we couldn’t break the press.
“Second half we had more confidence to break the press and we had more chances. It’s nice to see when the players work very hard and they received rewards for their work.”
