Surfer missing after suspected shark attack off southwest Australia | World News

Police say a man is missing after a suspected shark attack off the southwest coast of Australia.

A surfboard was found floating at Wylie Bay, near the town of Esperance, but there was no trace of the man riding it.

Paramedics raised the alert at Kelp Beds Beach and a search was launched on Friday morning.

A witness reported a potential shark attack at around 11am, according to ABC News, following a sighting at about 9.20am.

Local media say the beach has been closed and that the surf spot is notorious for shark attacks.

A diver was killed by a great white shark off Esperance in January – his body was never found.

In 2017, a 17-year-old girl was killed in the same area.

Close encounters of the Jaws kind

The suspected attack comes after surfer Matt Wilkinson had a close encounter with a great white shark off Ballina on the Australian east coast on Wednesday.

Drone footage showed it coming within inches of his feet as he paddled, before suddenly darting away.
