Former Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has died, his party has confirmed.

He served as MP for Newry and Armagh for almost a decade and was also a former member of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald described him as a “friend and comrade” and said she had learned of his death “with deep sadness and a very heavy heart”.

Brady was a welfare rights adviser before he entered politics and McDonald said he had “dedicated his entire life to the people of Newry and Armagh”.
