Brian Leishman MP’s anger over Grangemouth refinery closure

He also made a case for the refinery to be nationalised.

He said the owner of the refinery was effectively in charge of the country’s oil security.

He noted that the refinery was owned by Petroineos – a joint venture between Ineos and PetroChina.

“PetroChina is the petrochemical wing of the Chinese Communist Party,” he said – adding that Ineos was privately owned.

“There is absolutely no reason that such a key piece of vital national structure should be in those hands, it should be government owned,” Leishman said.

He noted that the refinery claimed it cost £100m a year to operate but that reports suggested it contributed more than £400m to Scotland’s economy.
