Russian drone strikes Ukraine’s security service headquarters in Kyiv, Zelenskyy says | World News

A Russian drone has struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s state security service (SBU), president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

At least seven people were injured in the attack on the building in Kyiv, across from the historic St Sophia Cathedral.

Heavy black smoke was seen rising from the city centre, along with numerous ambulances and emergency services at the scene.

Mr Zelenskyy posted on X: “The drone was aimed directly at the office of the head of the security service in that building.”

He said he had spoken with the head of Ukraine’s security service, Oleksandr Poklad, and instructed him to deliver an “appropriate” response to Russia that “mirrors this strike”.

It is not immediately clear if SBU members were among those injured.

Throughout the war, the SBU has carried out high-impact strikes targeting Russia’s war machine and its energy infrastructure.

It bombed a Russian bridge to occupied Crimea in 2022 and carried out a 2025 drone attack which struck Russian strategic bombers.

Friday’s attack marks one of the rare occasions in which a Ukrainian government building has been damaged during the conflict.

The ‌owner of the popular Zavertailo bakery said on Telegram that their building opposite the SBU building was also destroyed in the attack.

Kyiv has faced repeated Russian drone attacks for 10 days, with a university in the city centre also hit on Wednesday.
