The owner of Poundland is racing to agree a sale of the discount retailer within weeks as it seeks to finalise new ownership ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.
Sky News has learnt that Alvarez & Marsal (A&M), the firm appointed to advise Gordon Brothers last month, wants to secure a sale of Poundland before the end of October, according to people briefed on the process.
Initial bids are expected to be tabled early next month, said one.
The auction of one of Britain’s biggest discount chains comes just over a year after Gordon Brothers bought it in a deal which led to the closure of roughly 200 stores.
Poundland trades from about 600 sites and employs about 12,000 people in the UK.
Insiders said the sale process would formally kick off on Wednesday when A&M begins contacting prospective buyers of the business.
Gordon Brothers has already received a number of unsolicited approaches for the chain, with Modella Capital, the prolific retail investor which owns TGJones and Hobbycraft, among the potential bidders.
Strategic as well as financial investors are expected to show an interest.
One source claimed that Gordon Brothers had supported Poundland and its management team in successfully stabilising and improving the business, with the company becoming profitable on an EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation basis) this year.
Gordon Brothers and A&M declined to comment.
