People with multiple sclerosis in Shetland are to get free gym memberships.

MS disproportionately affects people in Scotland’s Northern Isles, with the highest rates in the world recorded in Orkney.

There are several risk factors for developing MS, such as lower levels of vitamin D, however, researchers are still unsure as to why rates are particularly high in the Northern Isles.

The new gym scheme is being run by the MS Society Shetland Group, who secured a grant from the Shetland Charitable Trust.

The group says that physical activity is extremely important for people living with neuro-degenerative diseases.
