Dundee have demanded action from the Scottish FA over a delay to stopping play after Michael Mellon suffered a head injury during Sunday’s Scottish Premiership match against St Johnstone.

Manager Tony Docherty had described the head injury suffered by striker Mellon, on loan from Burnley, as “almost life-endangering” after the incident during the match.

Mellon was left unconscious after the clash of heads with St Johnstone captain Liam Gordon, but referee David Munro failed to stop play immediately.

The game was eventually stopped after Dundee’s club doctor Derek McCormack ran on to the pitch, with a lengthy delay while the player was attended to.

The club has confirmed the 20-year-old has now been released from hospital – but demanded the SFA take action after the incident.

“Michael sustained a significant head injury in yesterday’s match against St Johnstone, but thanks to the swift intervention by Dr McCormack and the medical team, his condition was stabilised and he was transferred to Ninewells Hospital Accident and Emergency Department,” the club said in a statement.

“Following specialist investigations he was discharged with appropriate head injury advice. He will continue his recovery under the supervision of the club’s medical team in accordance with concussion protocols.

“The club is today writing to the Scottish FA in the strongest terms to express its serious concerns that play was not stopped to allow immediate attention to Michael after what was clearly a dreadful head clash.”

Dundee came back from a goal down against St Johnstone to win 2-1 thanks to a late header from Jordan McGhee.

The SFA has been approached for comment.
