Meet Rathlin’s newest furry resident detecting ferrets

Meet Rathlin Island’s newest resident – Woody.

He is a two-year-old Fox Red Labrador who has joined the cause to protect the island’s seabirds from non-native species ferrets.

Woody’s handler, Michael Lafferty, says he will be used to initially detect ferrets before moving onto other invasive species such as rats.

“It’s been no easy feat attempting a world-first eradication, and we knew we needed the best dog for the job to get us over the finish line,” he said.

“Woody’s ludicrous energy levels, uncanny sniffing skills, and goofy grin ticked all our boxes.”
