Greenisland: Firefighters tackling blaze at church

Councillor Skinner said the fire could not have come at a worse time with the church celebrating its 70th anniversary this weekend.

He described how some parishioners he was chatting to had been telling him that they were at the church as recently as tonight.

And how those in neighbouring properties had come out of their homes and looked on at the fire in “shock”.

Cllr Skinner said that the church hall, which is attached to the church building, looked like it had been “completely destroyed, the roof’s off it” and that the full scale of the damage may not be known for hours.

He continued that the fire fighters had, so far, seemed to be able to contain the fire to the church hall.

But he added he imagined that there could be “significant water damage” to the main church building.
