Coronavirus: Gyms, indoor pools and leisure centres in England to reopen from 25 July | UK News

Gyms, swimming pools and other sports facilities are to be allowed to open their doors once again and this summer’s club cricket season is finally getting under way.

A day after Rishi Sunak served up cheap meals and urged the nation to “eat out to help out”, the government is relaxing lockdown rules to encourage us all to get fit again.

Outdoor swimming pools in England can reopen from 11 July and indoor gyms, swimming pools, dance studios and sports like badminton and volleyball from 25 July.

At a Downing Street news conference, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed beauty salons, tanning shops and tattooists can reopen in England from Monday.

Outdoor arts performances – including theatres, opera, dance and music – will also be able to resume from this weekend, although audience numbers will be restricted and will be subject to social distancing rules.

“Normal life is slowly returning,” Mr Dowden said.

There will be restrictions on numbers in gyms and pools and people will be encouraged to shower and change at home where possible, though changing rooms will be open.

Club cricket can also resume from this Saturday, 11 July, with a limited number of spectators allowed and clubhouse bars will be able to open, subject to social distancing rules.

Announcing the big re-opening, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “The reopening of gyms is the news millions across the country have been waiting for with many people desperate to jump on a spinning bike or dive into a pool.

“Our comprehensive guidance will ensure gyms, pools and leisure centres have the support they need to reopen safely for their customers and staff.

“Helping people return to gyms safely will also help the nation get match-fit to defeat this virus.”
