Coronavirus: 85 babies test positive for COVID-19 in Texas | US News

85 babies under the age of one have tested positive for coronavirus in Texas.

More than 10,000 new cases were reported for a fifth consecutive day on Saturday, and another 130 people died after testing positive for COVID-19.

“Please help us to stop the spread of this disease,” said Corpus Christi Nueces County Public Health Director Annette Rodriguez.

She added: “These babies have not even had their first birthday yet.”

Ms Rodriguez did not say how the infants had become infected.

She urged people to stay at home except for essential trips, to socially distance and wear masks in public.

Another lockdown has not been ruled out, with state governor Greg Abbott stressing the importance of face coverings.

The total number of reported cases in Texas is more than 317,000, with deaths approaching 4,000.

The true number of cases is likely to be higher because many people have not been tested.
