Cardiff couple invited man in at Christmas

“She said to me ‘ask him to stay with us tonight it’s Christmas’ and he never left – he lived with us for 45 years.”

Rob Parsons and his wife Dianne were preparing for Christmas at their Cardiff home on 23 December 1975 when they heard a knock at the door.

On their doorstep stood Ronnie Lockwood, someone Rob would occasionally see at Sunday school as a boy.

“Now he’s 30 and he’s homeless,” said Rob and, despite being just 27 and 26 years old at the time, the couple felt compelled to take Ronnie, who was autistic, under their wing.

What started as an act of goodwill, turned into a remarkable companionship that lasted 45 years, until the day Ronnie died.
